A Level Further Mathematics (9231) is the holy grail of A Levels. It covers incredibly advanced topics like complex numbers, differential equations, and matrices.
When is it REQUIRED?
If you are applying to Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, or Warwick for Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science, Further Maths is almost always a strict requirement. Without it, your application will likely be rejected immediately.
When is it RECOMMENDED?
For Economics degrees at top-tier universities (like LSE or UCL), Further Maths is highly recommended. Economics at a high level is extremely mathematical, and universities want to know you can handle the rigor.
When should you AVOID it?
If you are struggling to get an A in regular A Level Maths, do not take Further Maths. A Grade C in Further Maths looks much worse on an application than an A in a different, more accessible subject like Geography or History.
Also, if you are applying for Medicine, Further Maths is utterly useless. Focus on Chemistry and Biology instead.
