Being a private candidate or self-studying an extra A Level is incredibly rewarding but requires massive discipline. Without teachers to set deadlines, it's easy to drift.
1. Syllabus is Your Bible
Download the official Cambridge Syllabus for your specific exam year. This document explicitly states everything you can be tested on. If it's not in the syllabus, don't waste time studying it.
2. YouTube is Your Classroom
There are phenomenal teachers on YouTube for almost every subject. Channels like Science Shorts (Physics), FreeScienceLessons, and various Maths channels can completely replace classroom instruction.
3. Past Papers are Your Exams
You don't have mock weeks, so you must create your own. Every month, print out a full past paper from RevisionGrid, sit in a quiet room, and time yourself. Mark it strictly.
4. Beware of Practicals
If you are taking Sciences, Paper 3 (A Level) or Paper 5 (IGCSE) is a hands-on practical. As a private candidate, you MUST find a local exam center that allows you to use their lab to practice, or opt for the Alternative to Practical paper (Paper 6 for IGCSE) if your board allows it.
